From ‘Jolly Drover’ to Jolly Driver

21 April 2009

Ged Rogan, born in the Jolly Drovers Pub, Leadgate and ex Royal Artillery was helped by Derwentside Employment Team to set up as a Self Employed Taxi Driver in March.

Ged had worked all his life until he was made redundant in November 2008. He confessed “Its was an absolute body blow, I’d lost the security I had always taken for granted and I felt I was letting my family down” He added “It’s hard when you bump into people you know and they ask what you’re doing today and you have to tell them you’re out of work”

After a visit to Consett Jobcentre, Ged was given the number for Derwentside Employment Team and that’s when he met Silvia an Employment Adviser, he said “What a boost that was, if it wasn’t for Silvia I wouldn’t be working now”.

Silvia worked out Ged’s options and put the wheels in motion to make Self Employment a realistic goal.

She said “I helped Ged maximise the support he was entitled to by accessing funding and other help to make the process of going Self Employed easy” she added “It was a pleasure to support Ged back to work, I could see that he genuinely wanted to start providing for his family again and I was keen to harness his enthusiasm before he lost his motivation and morale”
